A large tower block in north eastern Chinahas been split perfectly in half by a controlled explosion.

Construction workers manually cut throughsupporting walls in the middle of the Xiangyun Building in the city ofShenyang, Liaoning Province, before explosives were used to preciselydemolish just one side.

A series of incredible photographs takenduring the demolition show one half of the tower block remaining almost totallyintact while the other half crumbles into a large pile of dust andrubble.

The Xiangyun Building is being demolishedas Shenyang officials consider its design and facilities to be out of date withthe fast modernising city - which the largest and most heavily populatedin north east China.

Despite the effort that went into splittingthe building in half, the other side is scheduled to be demolished over thenext two days. The job is believed to have been divided in two in order toreduce the risk to the tightly-packed surrounding buildings.

Once the rubble is cleared away, the planis to turn the site into a commercial complex, with an indoor theme park, hugefive-star hotel, hypermarket, and office block.
